THIN NEEDLE ASPIRATE CULTURE

Alternate Names: Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy,
Needle Aspiration Biopsy,
Test Includes: Isolation and identification of potential aerobic and anaerobic pathogens.

Antibiotic susceptibility testing of aerobes where indicated.

Gram stain

Performed: Daily
Turnaround Time: Preliminary reports for aerobic organisms reported after 24 hours and after 48 hours for anaerobes.
Complete reports of culture with anaerobic bacteria may take as long as 10 days to 2 weeks after receipt of culture.

Container / Specimen Requirements

Specific site of specimen MUST be stated
    Container / Tube: Syringe
    Minimum Volume: 0.50 mL

(If less than 0.5 mL, the specimen should be inoculated into 1% Casamino acid solution.)
Special Handling or Timing of Specimen: Test performed at NHRMC only.
Specimens must be delivered to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection.
Preparation of Patient: Specimens are collected in the Department of Radiology by a Radiologist according to established protocols of this medical center.
Expected Results: No growth
Causes for Specimen Rejection:  Improper labeling.
Specimen not collected in sterile container.
Specimen container must not be contaminated on the outside.
Needles must be removed from syringes.
Specimens must be delivered to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection.
