OVA AND PARASITES, STOOL

Alternate Names: O & P
Test Includes: Gross appearance and consistency.

Direct wet mounts and permanent stained smears ar examined.

Note: If pinworm is suspected, a pinworm preparation (Scotch® Tape Prep) should be ordered.

Note: If Cryptosporidium and/or Giardia is suspected, a Cryptosporidium / Giardia Antigen test should be ordered.

Performed: Daily
Turnaround Time: 1 - 3 Days for complete report.

Container / Specimen Requirements

 
    Container / Tube: Screw cap container.
    Minimum Volume: 2g or 5-10 mL
Special Handling or Timing of Specimen: Test performed at NHRMC only.
Specimens must be delivered to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection.
Preparation of Patient: None
Expected Results: No ova or parasites seen.
Causes for Specimen Rejection:  Improper labeling.
Specimen not collected in sterile container.
Specimen container must not be contaminated on the outside.
Specimens must be delivered to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection.

Specimens obtained with barium, mineral oil, bismuth, iron, or magnesium compounds are not acceptable. (Specimens obtained with saline enema or Fleet® Phospho®-Soda are acceptable.)
