NASOPHARYNGEAL CULTURE

Alternate Names: None
Test Includes: Isolation and identification of potential upper respiratory tract bacterial pathogens.

Specimens may be cultured for Bordetella pertussis upon request.

Antibiotic susceptibility testing where indicated.

Gram stain

Performed: 24 hours per day / 7 days per week
Turnaround Time: Preliminary reports available after 24 hours. Bordetella pertussis results take up to 7 days.

Container / Specimen Requirements

 
    Container / Tube: Culturette®,
Nasopharyngeal aspirate, or
Nasopharyngeal washing.
Capped syringe or sterile tube
    Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL or swab
Special Handling or Timing of Specimen: Test performed at NHRMC only.
Specimens must be delivered to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection.
Preparation of Patient: None
Expected Results: Normal Respiratory Flora
Causes for Specimen Rejection:  Improper labeling.
Specimen not collected in sterile container.
Specimen container must not be contaminated on the outside.
Specimens must be delivered to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection.
