BLOOD CULTURE

Alternate Names: None
Test Includes: Isolation and identification of potential aerobic and anaerobic pathogens, and antibiotic susceptibility testing of aerobes where indicated.
Performed: Daily, 24 Hours
Turnaround Time: Positive cultures are immediately called to physician.
Negative cultures are reported after 5 days.

Container / Specimen Requirements

 
    Container / Tube  

Adults and older children:

7 mL SPS tubes

Neonates and young children:

4 mL SPS tubes
    Minimum Volume: 7 mL
pediatric: 4 mL
Special Handling or Timing of Specimen: Positive blood cultures are sent to NHRMC for identification and antibiotic susceptibility.
Preparation of Patient: None

Expected Results: No growth
Causes for Specimen Rejection:  Improper labeling, blood contaminated tubes
