Physicians, patient's nurse, and Infection Control will be notified immediately of positive smears

Container / Specimen Requirements

Specific site of specimen MUST be stated
    Container / Tube: Sterile container appropriate for specimen.
    Minimum Volume: 1 mL
Special Handling or Timing of Specimen: Test performed at NHRMC only.
Specimens must be delivered to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection.
Preparation of Patient: None
Expected Results: No acid - fast bacilli seen on smear.
Causes for Specimen Rejection:  Improper labeling.
