Clinical Pastoral Education
The Clinical Pastoral Education Program at New Hanover is accredited by the
Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. New Hanover Regional
Medical Center is a 769 bed acute care medical center providing inpatient and
outpatient services and designated by the state as a Level II Regional Trauma
Center for Southeastern North Carolina. Students who minister and study
with us encounter a broad spectrum of the human condition from the celebration
of life to the mourning of death.
What Is Clinical Pastoral Education?
Clinical Pastoral Education is interfaith professional education for
ministry, where learning is derived from the supervised practice of
ministry. The foundation of CPE at New Hanover is ministry with patients,
families and staff; the student functions in a pastoral role providing spiritual
care to persons in crisis. This ministry is then critically, yet
supportively, reviewed by the participant’s supervisor and peers in the training
program through a variety of focused seminars. Personal reflection on
one’s ministry is also facilitated through structured written reports designed
to support the learning process.
At New Hanover our educational philosophy is informed by a “theology of
hospitality” which means to create a friendly space where the student feels
welcome and safe. This invitation fosters trust in peers and supervisor(s)
in developing the learning alliance. In a parallel process, it is our hope
that students who feel welcomed will extend hospitality to patients and families
who are guests in the medical center.
