One of the extraordinary features of the NHRMC Rehabilitation Hospital is Easy Street®. Located in the therapy gym, Easy Street® is designed to offer patients an opportunity to practice getting around different types of "real world" environments. Patients can learn, or re-learn, how to negotiate the curbs of a street, a beach, golf course and buildings with a walker, cane or wheelchair.
Local businesses added to the unique environment of Easy Street® through donations to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation and the 1993 and 1994 Coastal Classic Celebrity Golf Tournaments. Through their generosity the NHRMC Rehabilitation Hospital was able to add many special features to the therapy gym, including the following:
Convenience store - Scotchman Stores donated produce bins with accurately weighted plastic fruits and vegetables which patients can practice placing into their grocery cart or basket. Patients learn how to overcome their physical restrictions to reach for items on a shelf or in a freezer then go through a check-out line.
Bank office - First Citizens Bank donated funding for a realistic bank office and automatic teller machine.
Department store - Belks contributed to a department store setting in which patients can practice getting around racks and trying on clothes in a changing room.
Fast food restaurant - Hardee's helped build a restaurant setting in Easy Street®, complete with a menu and booth chairs to be negotiated.
Car - Schaeffer Buick provided a car for patients to practice getting in and out of a vehicle.
Apartment - An apartment is available for patients to start making the adjustment to going home. Wheat First Butcher Singer donated steps and a porch leading to the area.
