Family Medicine Residency Program

Welcome to the Family Medicine Residency program at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. We are a dually accredited AOA/ACGME community based program affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We are sponsored by New Hanover Regional Medial Center, a 855 bed hospital that serves as both the general hospital for the community as well as the tertiary referral center for the Southeastern region of North Carolina. Our practice site, the Coastal Family Medicine Center, is only a short distance away and provides ample space for clinical and educational activities.
Our program consists of 5 physician faculty who all enthusiastically provide full spectrum family medicine, as well as a specialist in behavioral medicine and a Pharm D. All of our faculty have appointments in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Our small size allows close interaction with each of our faculty and multiple opportunities for individualized teaching. We also have the opportunity to host medical students from the University of North Carolina, Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University as well as several osteopathic medical schools around the region.
Our curriculum, while rigorous, does not preclude you from exploring the fascinating history, cultures and great outdoors of the Wilmington area. The town was founded in 1732 and has a host of historical homes and sites to explore. Did you know that Wilmington is known locally as "Hollywood East" for its status as the 3rd largest movie making location after Hollywood and New York? And, of course there are the beautiful beaches which invite you to sail, kayak, surf or just relax with a good book.
I invite you to take some time and look over our faculty and current residents, educational links and links to the Wilmington area. Our faculty and residents originally hail from all over the United States, but I warn you, over 60% stay in Southeastern North Carolina and 80% stay in the state of North Carolina. Once you get here, you may find it hard to leave!
Thank you for your interest in our program. Please let us know if we can help you as you decide on this important step in your career.
