Residency Programs
I wish to welcome you to the Residency Programs at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Our Medical Center became a teaching hospital in 1973 through an affiliation with South East Area Health Education Center (SEAHEC), and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. SEAHEC administers New Hanover Regional Medical's four accredited Graduate Medical Education Programs: Internal Medicine, that includes a three year Categorical and a one year Preliminary Residency; General Surgery, inclusive of a five year General Surgery Program and a one year Categorical Program; Obstetrics and Gynecology, a four year Residency Program; and a duly accredited MD/DO Family Medicine Residency of three years. These Programs create a network of opportunities for residency teaching, undergraduate medical teaching, and continuing education for health care providers in our region as well as a resource for community development and education.
Our faculty is a full time faculty. Twenty three members of the UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine are permanently based in Wilmington and are responsible for the teaching programs at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Additionally, a faculty consisting of private practicing physicians hold appointments at the UNC School of Medicine and participate actively in our teaching programs. They make substantial contributions to the daily conference schedule and consulting services. SEAHEC also provides clinical and community rotations for Health Sciences students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I invite you to explore the following web pages and its content, and we stand ready to answer any questions or provide any more information you may have about our Residency Programs.
Mark D. Darrow, MD, FACP President/CEO, SEAHEC Vice President Graduate Medical Education, NHRMC
