New Hanover Regional Emergency Medical Services, the network's pre-hospital care provider, is widely recognized for its superior level of care. NHR EMS was designated North Carolina's first model EMS system.
EMS has integrated its services to provide people who need care the right level of service when and where it's needed. It includes paramedic service as well as air and ground critical care transport, inter-hospital transfer, and a 24-hour nurse referral and medical advice service.

New Hanover Regional EMS operates a fleet of 12 ambulances from seven stations in New Hanover County. In addition to the ambulances, New Hanover Regional EMS stations a rescue vehicle in the southern part of the county to help extricate people trapped in vehicles or buildings. It also has three first responder vehicles stationed throughout the county, enabling paramedics to respond quickly to a scene while waiting for ambulance transport to arrive. Bike teams are available to provide help in crowded areas, most notably the Azalea Festival Street Fair and the July 4 fireworks display in downtown Wilmington.
Critical Care Transport
Patients who are critically ill or injured and need to be transferred from one hospital to another can be taken by ground or air.
