NHRMC’s Zimmer Cancer Center receives commendation
07/19/2011
WILMINGTON – New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Zimmer Cancer Center has been granted a three-year re-accreditation with commendation by the Commission on Cancer, a division of the American College of Surgeons. The accreditation was granted following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor of 36 standards of care that represent the full scope of the cancer program. Commendation is possible in seven of the 36 standards of care, and Zimmer Cancer Center demonstrated a commendation level of compliance with all possible standards. “This re-accreditation by the Commission on Cancer means we are adhering to rigorous national standards for our patients in terms of cancer care,” says Cyrus Kotwall, M.D., surgical oncologist and medical director of the Zimmer Cancer Center. “It means that all the physicians, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, and spiritual care givers who make up the team at Zimmer Cancer Center work hard to provide quality care for our patients throughout southeastern North Carolina during a difficult time of their life.” Accreditation by the Commission on Cancer is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a thorough evaluation process and review of their performance. To maintain accreditation, facilities must undergo an on-site review every three years. Some of the standards that are evaluated are quality of care, research programs, survivorship programs, genetic counseling and community outreach. Currently, less than 25 percent of all hospitals are accredited by the Commission on Cancer. “This re-accreditation substantiates the quality of care we provide for our patients,” says Chad Knight, administrator of the Zimmer Cancer Center. “We are very pleased to have not only met the standards for re-accreditation, but surpassed them to earn commendations on all seven standards.” New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Zimmer Cancer Center is southeastern North Carolina's only community cancer center dedicated solely to the diagnosis, treatment and support of people with cancer. It houses outpatient services, including chemotherapy, infusion therapy and radiation therapies. It also hosts NHRMC's clinical trials program, giving local residents a chance to participate in the most current clinical trials, testing the most modern chemotherapy drugs, and radiation and surgical protocols. New Hanover Regional Medical Center is the leading provider of quality and accessible health care in Southeastern North Carolina, delivering care to all in need, without the support of taxpayer dollars. The medical center takes seriously its responsibility as an economic engine for the community, creating more than 4,500 jobs directly and another 3,000 jobs indirectly. ###
