Awards and Recognition

New Hanover Regional Medical Center  programs and services are often recognized for the level of care they provide and the standards they set for similar programs across the state and country.  Below is a partial listing of the awards and recognition our programs have received in recent years:

Bariatric Program

In 2005, New Hanover Regional Medical Center was named a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society of Bariatric Surgery. Nationwide there are 135 hospitals and 265 surgeons who have achieved this designation.  In Wilmington, Dr. David R. Miles and Dr. James A. Harris were designated, along with New Hanover Regional.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield has selected New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Dr. David Miles as one of seven Obesity Surgery Centers of Excellence in North Carolina. Blue Cross' guidelines cite key components as quality outcomes, the ability to assess and follow through with patients, surgical experience, ability to manage patients, and a willingness to track results.  During a voluntary moratorium on bariatric surgery in 2002, the medical center developed criteria and guidelines for a formal Bariatric Program.

Cancer

The strength of the cancer program was recognized in November 2005, when the American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer re-approved NHRMC's status as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program. Just 25 percent of  hospitals in the United States share this designation.

Congestive Heart Failure

New Hanover Regional Medical Center's Heart Failure Program was recognized for significant improvement in the quality of healthcare provided to Medicare consumers in North Carolina. NHRMC's Ralph E. Snyder, MD Merit Award was one of three given by Medical Review of North Carolina, Inc. in 2003.   It was awarded for the Heart Failure Program in which Registered Nurses with VitaLine follow patients by telephone, usually after a hospital discharge, to ensure they are taking their medications and not facing any complications. By identifying potential issues early, the RNs are able to refer patients to their primary physicians or take other action that prevents a re-admission to the hospital and provides a better quality of life for patients in their home community.

Emergency Services

The N.C. Office of Emergency Management Services named New Hanover Regional EMS the first "model system" in the state in 2002.  In 2003, the designation was expanded to include AirLink and VitaLink.  Adding critical care transport to the designation is also a first for the state.  State reviewers said NHRMC had done an outstanding job and, as the first model system, were setting the standard for others in the state.

Heart Services

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina in 2006 named New Hanover Regional Medical Center a Cardiac Center of Excellence.

NHRMC joins the ranks of 16 other leading medical facilities in the state that have earned this distinction, including Duke University, UNC Hospitals and N.C. Baptist Hospital, and is one of only two cardiac centers of excellence east of Interstate 40.

Information Services

New Hanover Regional Medical Center was one of five health care institutions in the country to earn the VIP Award from McKesson Information Solutions. The award was presented for the network's implementation of Physician Portal, which gives physicians anytime, anywhere access to multiple sources of clinical information, including patient charts and electronic medical records. NHRMC physicians now review and sign all patient charts online. This and other clinical systems contributed to New Hanover Regional’s score of 97 on the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations survey.

Mammography Services

New Hanover Regional Medical Center has been designated a Mammography Educational Assistance Center for 2005 by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. The medical center was selected because of its outstanding mammography program and has been asked to volunteer its experience to help other mammography facilities.

Orthopedic Specialty Services

In 2005, the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Orthopedic Center at Cape Fear Hospital was named in the top 5 percent nationally for total hip and knee replacement and in the top 10 percent nationally for orthopedic care, according to a national ranking service.

Palliative Care

The Palliative Care Consultation Services Program, a program based at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in partnership with Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center, was selected as an "Emerging Champion of Change in North Carolina Medicine" by UNC public television. The recognition came as part of  a statewide campaign to identify innovative programs that empower patients to take more control of health care decisions.

The Palliative Care program helps patients facing serious decisions about their health care futures. For some, it may be the decision to receive care only to relieve pain and discomfort, and not to pursue a cure. Others may need assistance in coping with life-limiting illness or may want to begin end-of-life planning.

Respiratory Therapy

New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Cape Fear Hospital have earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition under a national program aimed at helping patients and their families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services available in hospitals.  Hospitals earning the desigation help ensure patient safety by agreeing to adhere to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services.

Trauma Program

The Trauma Program at New Hanover Regional Medical Center  was re-designated a Level II Trauma Center in December 2004. Surveyors from the state's Office of Emergency Services noted the passion and commitment among staff members and said NHRMC is recognized as a leader in the state. The Level II re-designation covers a three-year period.

The hospital is one of 10 Level I and Level II Trauma Centers in the state.  A Trauma Center manages severely injured or critically ill patients on a 24-hour basis, maintains a trauma registry database and provides continuing education on trauma prevention to the community.

VitaLink

VitaLink, New Hanover Regional EMS' ground transport service for critically ill patients, received a national award for excellence in October, 2004.  VitaLink was one of two winners of the Critical Care Ground Award for Excellence, presented by the national Association for Air Medical Services.
