New Hanover Regional Medical Center Takes Steps to Minimize Spread of Flu to Patients and Visitors
WILMINGTON – In order to help prevent the spread of the flu and protect patients, New Hanover Regional Medical Center is asking people not to visit if they have not had a flu vaccine this flu season, or if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms which may include a fever with sore throat, coughing, body aches, runny or stuffy nose, chills, fatigue or headache. Patients who come to the emergency departments or other care areas with those symptoms will be required to wear a mask. The policy will affect all New Hanover Regional Medical Center inpatient and outpatient locations, including the Betty H. Cameron Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Surgical Pavilion, Rehabilitation Hospital, Behavioral Health Hospital, Medical Mall, NHRMC Orthopedic Hospital, Pender Memorial Hospital, Oleander and Independence Rehabilitation Centers, NHRMC Diagnostic Centers, Nunnelee Pediatric Specialty Clinic, Outpatient Clinics, Atlantic SurgiCenter and Coastal Family Medicine. “We understand that people are concerned about their loved ones and may want to visit the hospital even if they are not feeling well or have not taken proper precautions by getting vaccinated for the flu,” said Paul Kamitsuka, M.D., hospital epidemiologist at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. “We take very seriously our responsibility to provide the highest quality of care to our patients and to offer them a place where they can get well. We feel this is a necessary step to ensure the safety of our patients.” For more information on the flu, visit the Centers for Disease Control website.
