Pink Ribbon Project
October 7, 2010 - Holiday Inn Resort, Wrightsville Beach
Since it's inception in 1998, the Pink Ribbon events and donations have raised more than $1.2 million and provided over 4,400 "Comfort Bags" to area women as they undergo treatment for cancer. Distributed by the Zimmer Cancer Center and area physician groups, the Pink Ribbon Comfort Bags are designed to bring comfort to women as they traverse through their cancer journey... from diagnosis to treatment. Items included in the bags are:
- There's No Place Like Hope, a guide to beating cancer by Vickie Girard
- A pink fleece blanket to be used to warm patients as they receive their chemotherapy treatments
- A small pillow sewn by volunteers from the New Hanover County Senior Center for use during chemotherapy and as a cushion between the seat belt and chest after surgery
- A Pink Ribbon Daytimer® planner to keep track of appointments and write down questions for their doctor
- A satin pillowcase for comfort after hair loss and an herbal eye pillow to help with relaxation
- The Satin Pillow, a book of helpful, non-clinical information and resources by Alyson Barnard and Jocelyn Lynch.
In addition to the Pink Ribbon Comfort Bags, the proceeds from Pink Ribbon Project also provide funding for uninsured women receiving mammography screening through a voucher system. Vouchers will be provided to medical offices that were formerly sites for the Care Van. On average, the Pink Ribbon Project provides 400 women with mammography screenings each year and will pay for additional diagnostics should a suspect screening occur.
The incredible success of the Pink Ribbon Project has not only provided early diagnosis and comfort to hundreds of area women, but has helped raise community awareness on the issue of women and cancer.
The 13th annual Pink Ribbon breakfast, luncheon and dinner will be held October 7, 2010 at the Holiday Inn Resort on Wrightsville Beach. This year's event is being chaired by Rochelle Myers and will feature National Best-Selling author, Mary Alice Monroe as the breakfast and luncheon speaker. Local Artist, Jane Faudree, will serve as the featured artist and has created artwork inspired by the Pink Ribbon project. Proceeds from this year's event will continue to support the Pink Ribbon Comfort Bags and funding for mammography screenings for women who could otherwise not afford them.
