Sylvia Rountree to be awarded the first Pink Ribbon Angel Award at the Pink Ribbon Luncheon on October 3
09/17/2013
WILMINGTON – The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation has named Sylvia Rountree as the 2013 Pink Ribbon Angel Award recipient in recognition of her generous support and commitment to improving cancer care in our community. Sylvia and her husband George have been generous supporters of NHRMC for many years, concentrating on patient care areas of the hospital including a significant gift to the original Zimmer Cancer Center building campaign. For the past 15 years, Sylvia has been a sponsor of the Pink Ribbon Luncheon, and in 2006 established a fund at the NHRMC Foundation to help women undergoing cancer treatment pay for their medications. Because of the Rountrees’ generosity, 1,505 uninsured women with cancer have received more than 3,800 prescriptions they may not have been able to afford otherwise. “When I was diagnosed in 1992, I chose to stay in Wilmington for my treatment. I knew that mentally and physically it was the best choice for me. When my daughter, Gina, was diagnosed in 1999, she was nursing a seven month old daughter, so staying home was a pretty easy choice for her. We could not have had better outcomes,” said Sylvia. “NHRMC and its its staff of physicians and health care providers, gave us their best and through our support, we try to return the dedication.” Tickets for the 16th annual NHRMC Foundation’s Pink Ribbon luncheon and evening cocktail party, presented by Wells Fargo, are available now by clicking here or by calling the Foundation at 910.815.5002. Proceeds from the events will provide free mammograms and diagnostics for women without insurance or resources to pay for them, Comfort Bags to women newly diagnosed with cancer, and the Healing Arts program at NHRMC to provide complementary therapies such as massage therapy, art & music therapies. The Pink Ribbon Luncheon will be held on Thursday, October 3 at the Wilmington Convention Center and will feature an exclusive purse auction and special table raffle by REEDS Jewelers. New York Times best-selling author, Emily Giffin, will be the guest speaker. The Pink Ribbon Celebration Cocktail Party, being held at the Country Club of Landfall, will be in honor of Dan and Sheila Saklad who made a generous gift to establish the Dan and Sheila Saklad Oncology Education Endowment at NHRMC. The Pink Ribbon Cocktail Party will be held on Friday, November 1 and will feature entertainment from Bibis Ellison, a jewelry auction and a Rolex watch raffle donated by REEDS Jewelers. For tickets to this event, click hereor call the NHRMC Foundation at 910.815.5002. Wells Fargo is the presenting sponsor of both Pink Ribbon Events. Since 1998, the Pink Ribbon events, community partnerships and donations have raised more than $1.4 million and provided over 5,600 Comfort Bags to area women as they undergo treatment for cancer. These bags contain items that range from the practical to the inspirational and are designed to let women know they’re not alone as they go through a difficult period. The Pink Ribbon Project also funds mammography screenings for women in our region who do not have health insurance or financial resources, and follow-up diagnostic procedures for women who receive a suspect mammography result. Since October 1, 2012, the Pink Ribbon Project has already helped 1,033 people with mammograms and follow-up diagnostics, already surpassing the 860 people served in all of fiscal year 2012.
