Neuroscience

Patient Population and Complexity of Care

The inpatient acute care unit Neuroscience of New Hanover Regional Medical Center provides 24 hour continuous, comprehensive nursing care to acute medical-surgical patients. The patient population on Neuroscience includes adults through the geriatric life span of development.  An interdisciplinary health team reviews the patients' progress in daily patient care conferences.

Staffing

Neuroscience nursing personnel includes professional RNs and LPNs who are competent to provide care within the scope of their professional practice. Unit Clerks (UCs), Nursing Assistants (NAs) and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) complete the nursing staff complement of the unit.

Other members of the interdisciplinary health team include Case Managers, Social Workers, Respiratory Therapists, Rehabilitation Therapists (ST, OT, PT), Physicians, and Movement Healing Arts Therapists.

The average nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5 patients on Neuroscience for the 24-hour continuum of care. The amount of staff maintained on the schedule is reflective of projected patient census and acuity. Daily staffing level and assignments are adjusted according to variances in patient volume, acuity and special patient care needs.

Qualifications of Personnel

Registered nurses possess specialized training, knowledge and skills as reflected in the NC Nurse Practice Act.  All nurses maintain a current license in the state of North Carolina and certification in BCLS as well as documented annual competencies. The staff has received much recognition for their proactive approach as advocates for their patient care.

Professional Governance Practice Model

  • Collaborative self scheduling (primarily 12 hour shifts)

  • Membership on Nursing Congress
  • Retention and Recognition Council
  •  Mentors for new graduates
