At New Hanover Regional Medical Center and the Zimmer Cancer Center we recognize caring for a person with cancer involves much more than treating the cancer itself.  While our oncology specialists have decades of experience and use advanced cancer-fighting technology to give patients the best chance of overcoming the disease, their clinical expertise is just a part of what makes New Hanover Regional Medical Center an exceptional place to receive cancer care.  Patients will also find staff members dedicated to helping them understand their options, find the resources they need, and learn how to cope with the emotional and physical challenges cancer can present.

The strength of the cancer program was recognized in May 2008  when the American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer re-approved NHRMC's status as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program. Just 25 percent of  hospitals in the United States share this designation. To learn more about our cancer services, outreach and physicians, follow the links below.

Hospice and Palliative Care

A special approach to caring for terminally ill individuals with a life expectancy of six months or less, hospice stresses relief of pain and uncomfortable symptoms as opposed to curative care.  It also stresses the needs of the patient's family or caregiver, providing support and bereavement services for the patient's family.

Palliative care bridges the gap between home health and hospice.  Staffed by hospice-trained nurses, palliative care is available for patients who have a life-limiting prognosis, but are still receiving aggressive therapy or are not quite ready to accept hospice.
