A subspecialty of general surgery, pediatric surgery focuses on the surgical care of infants and children up to age 18. Pediatric surgeons have four years of medical school training, five years of surgery residency and two years of training in pediatric surgery. Conditions commonly treated by pediatric surgeons range from the simple to the complex, including appendicitis, hernia, birth defects, traumatic injury, and malignant and benign tumors.
